Catholic Academy - 2007 Summer Reading List - Grade 6 |
Dear Incoming Sixth Grader:
Welcome to summer and the Sixth Grade Summer Reading Program! Your assignment for the upcoming summer months is to read The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick. You will respond in writing to a number of journal prompts. You will also have to identify unfamiliar words you read and look up their definitions in the dictionary.
The grade you receive on this assignment will be counted as a test grade. You will also take a short objective test on the book during the first week of school. Together, these will be your first grades in Reading for the first quarter. Please follow the following steps for your summer reading.
1. Go to the library or a bookstore to obtain a copy of The Invention of Hugo Cabret. You will only need the book to read and complete your assignment; it is not necessary to purchase the book.
2. Purchase a composition book or notebook to use as a journal for your assignment. Please do not purchase anything smaller than a composition book. This assignment will be the only thing in the journal.
3.Cut out the individual journal prompts listed on the attached page and paste them onto a journal page. Use only one page per prompt. You may choose to rewrite the prompt on the top of the journal page. Answer the journal prompts in the form of a paragraph using complete sentences.
4. As you are reading, choose at least twelve vocabulary words per chapter that is unfamiliar to you. After looking up the work in the dictionary use the sheets below to list the word and rate your understanding. You will then write a definition using your own words, draw a picture, and next to the picture list synonyms, antonyms or related words.
We encourage you not to limit yourself to one book. You can earn 5 extra points for the first quarter for participating in the summer reading program at any library or for those programs sponsored by local bookstores. A maximum of 10 points will be granted. Bring in your completed sheets or certificates as proof of participation.
Have a wonderful summer. We look forward to seeing you all in the fall!
Sincerely,
