Lakewood Catholic Academy - 2007 Summer Reading List - Grade 2

Dear Parents:

To further develop reading appreciation and to practice reading strategies, all second grade students entering Lakewood Catholic Academy will be required to complete the attached assignments. We recognize that there are various reading levels among our students; please decide when it’s necessary to read a story to your child or to have your child read a story to him/herself. You may always, if you wish, assist your child with the written portion of the assignment:

Below are a few to reading strategies you may wish to use with your child so he/she receives the maximum benefit from the summer reading experience:

-- Pre-Read the story by examining the illustrations.
-- Use phonics to decode words.
-- Make and confirm predictions.
-- Sequence events and summarize the story.
-- Reread the story: silently, orally, or together.
-- Identify the beginning, middle, and end of the story.

-- Select special words you wish to remember and keep them in a notebook.

We also encourage you to read aloud each day to your child. Always have a good story going. Encourage your child to read to you ("Come and let's sit together. I just love to hear you read.”) An excellent book for every parent who wishes to discover the joys of reading aloud to their child(ren) is The Reading A-loud Handbook by Jim Trelease. Among many good “reading aloud” books are the Caldecott and Newbery Award Winners. Click here for the list of the Newbery books and here for the Caldecott winners. You can also find these books at your local library.

We hope you enjoy your reading time together this summer and look forward to meeting all of you this fall!
