Discipline
Policy:
As a student of SS Cyril & Methodius Catholic School, each child must follow the "Code of
Conduct" which is also to be signed by the student. Parent/guardian must accept the
responsibility for helping their children develop self-control. If there are repeated difficulties,
or behavioral problems, the Parent/guardian will be notified and asked to come to the school for a
conference with the teacher, principal, pastor, or all. Students who are unable to comply with
appropriate behavior expectations or exhibit aggressive behaviors will be dismissed from school.
All students will be asked to pass a grade-appropriate examination of the school rules.
All behavior, both good and bad, has consequences. Students who break the rules will not be punished,
they will be issued a consequence for the action. Instead of a rigid set of consequences, teachers and
administrators will issue fair, but not necessarily equal, consequences at their discretion. Consequences
are listed below, following the BIG RULES.
Student Code of Conduct - BIG RULES
1. Be on time for classes, maintain regular attendance, participate and perform work as
directed, including participation - and accept total responsibility for your actions.
2. Respect the educational process with appropriate language, attitude and physical
behavior toward all persons in the school. Stealing, forgery, and plagiarism are
forbidden.
3. Respect students' and teachers' rights in an environment free of intimidation or
harassment. Touching another student, other than accidentally, and/or fighting is
forbidden.
4. Comply with both the School Dress and Technology Codes.
5. Show respect in church, halls, classrooms, and lavatories. Use "indoor" voice so as
not to disturb classes or staff. Rise and greet adults when they enter a room.
6. Report anything that another student does that could harm you, harm others, or harm
themselves. Reporting should be done with genuine concern for others, not for tattling,
for fun, or to deliberately get another student in trouble. Lying to cover up a violation or
to "save" another student will not be tolerated.
7. Do not bring any electronic equipment or money to school. If you have to carry a
valuable for use after school, give it to a teacher for lock-up. Cell phones CANNOT be
used ANYWHERE on school premises. Electronics/phones will be confiscated if found.
Only a parent can retrieve it from the principal.
8. Possession and/or use of tobacco products, drugs, weapons or look-alikes are
forbidden and may be grounds for immediate dismissal.

Students are expected to practice self discipline in classrooms. They
are expected to listen to the educators and not cause disruptions of

games should not jeopardize the safety of others. Fighting,
pushing or even touching another student or teacher inappropriately
are strictly forbidden. When the bell rings, all playing stops. Students are required toreturn to the building and/or classes quickly and quietly. Only
play equipment authorized by the Principal may be used in the playground. Students
are not permitted to leave the area to retrieve any balls, etc. A
monitor will assist them.
Proper
etiquette is required in the cafeteria while students remain seated
and speak quietly while eating. All food should be eaten in
the cafeteria, not outdoors. Students are required to keep
their respective eating areas and rest rooms clean and orderly. Students should enter and depart lavatories quickly - they are not social gethering places.
Consequences
When a child reports a problem to a parent, the parent/guardian needs to first speak to the teacher. If the
problem has not been resolved, the parent/guardian should contact the Dean or Principal. If, after both
prior contacts are made, the problem still has not been resolved, the parent/guardian may meet with the
teacher and pastor. Under no circumstances should the parent/guardian skip one or any of the above
steps.
During the school day, while infractions of the Code of Student Conduct are dealt with on an
individual basis, all choices involve consequences. When self-discipline is lacking, the following
guidelines are left to the teachers' discretion, depending on the severity and/or frequency of the
offense. Consequences below are in no particular order.
Personal interview with the student:
This is the first step in assisting a student. This may include verbal warning and/or time out,
referral to appropriate personnel with the possible consequence of a discipline referral form to be
signed by the parents and returned to school the next day where it is kept on file.
Loss of privileges:
Students using inappropriate language or conduct in the cafeteria, playground, or classroom may
lose the privilege of using the cafeteria or recess. Inappropriate behavior may also result in being
excluded from assemblies, field trips, and other school related activities. Loss of privilege may also
include temporary removal from a class or play area to a supervised location.
Making of restitution:
Students, who destroy property, mark or deface property, classroom, cafeteria, lavatories, gym,
etc. will be required to clean, and fix, repair or replace damaged items.
Conferences with parents:
Students who repeatedly disregard rules will attend a conference with a teacher or appropriate
personnel and one's parents/guardian.
Conduct Referral/Student Infraction Notice (SIN):
Lack of material or homework.
Disruptive behavior/tardiness.
Continually out of uniform.
Continuous tardiness. 4 Tardies = 1 Detention. (1/2 hour time period)
Detention:
Three conduct referrals/Student Infraction Notices in one grading period.
Disregarding or talking back to authority.
Fighting, throwing objects, name calling, making fun of others or threatening others.
Damaging property.
Saturday School:
If a student receives more than four (4) detentions in one grading period, he/she will attend
Saturday School, from 8:30 AM until 11:30 AM on an assigned Saturday. Parent is required to pay
a $20. fee.
Suspension:
When the appropriate steps have been taken to correct a problem with no significant
improvement, a student may be placed on either in-school or out-of-school suspension. It will be
clearly stated in writing. Students who do not comply with the terms of the suspension may be
asked to leave the school if the seriousness of the situation warrants such action.
Regular suspension excludes the student from the school. Suspensions may last from one to five
days, depending on the gravity of the offense or the number of prior offenses. The student, not the
teacher, is responsible for work missed. However, major tests missed during a suspension may not
be made up. Credit is not given for work completed during an out-of-school suspension. There is a
limit of two suspensions per year. If there is a cause for a third suspension, the parent/guardian
will be asked to withdraw their child from school. If the parent refuses, the child will be expelled.
The following may be reasons for suspension as deemed necessary by the Principal.
- Use of abusive language to a teacher, a substitute, staff member, or a parent/guardian.
- Severely disruptive or disrespectful behavior in the classroom, church or on school property.
- Harassment of a school employee, either on or off school premises.
- Habitual fighting or vulgarity.
- Willful damage to school property.
- Leaving campus without permission.
- Forging parent's or guardian's signature.
- Any action or word harmful to the health or dignity of the student.
Other situations may also result in suspension. Students on suspension may not return to class until there has been a
conference with the parent/guardian. Absences due to suspension from school are unexcused.
Note: Any student who has
been suspended will not be permitted to participate in any sports related activity.
Expulsion:
Expulsion is a serious matter and will be invoked only as a last resort. A student may be expelled,
but not necessarily, for either a single serious offense or for lack of parental support. Final
decision rests with the principal. The following offenses, committed by a student while under the
jurisdiction of the school, are some reasons for expulsion.
- Actions seriously detrimental to the moral and spiritual welfare of the students.
- Any inappropriate behavior of a sexually explicit or obscene nature.
- Continued willful disobedience.
- Open, persistent insubordination towards a teacher, a staff member, a substitute, principal, or pastor.
- Habitual profanity or vulgarity.
- Use, sale, or possession of narcotics or alcohol.
- Willfully cutting, defacing, or damaging school property, whether permanent or temporary.
- Stealing.
- Habitual truancy.
- Assault, or any threat of force or violence directed towards any school personnel or student.
- Possession and/or use of hazardous items such as matches, lighters, knives, guns, or other weapons.
