MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

It is hard to believe that we will be entering the final quarter of the school year in just a few weeks. We have completed TerraNova testing and will be moving into 3, 4, 5th grade Ohio Achievement Testing at the end of the month. The schedule for the achievement tests is as follows:

Monday, April 21 - 4th, 5th Reading
Tuesday, April 22 - 5th Math
Wednesday, April 23 - 4th Math
Thursday, April 24 - 5th Science
Friday, April 25 - 4th Writing
Monday, April 28 - 3rd Reading
Tuesday, April 29 - 5th Social Studies
Wednesday, April 30 - 3rd Math

We ask that you avoid making appointments or keeping these students out of school for any reason other than illness during this testing period. Even if a 3rd grader passed the October Reading test, he/she will take the test again in April. This gives students the opportunity to increase their score.

LAKEWOOD EXPANDS ALL-DAY KINDERGARTEN PROGRAM
In response to parents' needs and requests, the Board of Education of the Lakewood City School District has approved the expansion of the all-day kindergarten pilot program into two additional schools for the 2008-2009 school year. Elementary schools that will offer extended-day and half-day kindergarten are: Harrison, Hayes, Emerson (Taft School area), and Horace Mann (McKinley School area). Only half-day kindergarten will be available at Grant, Lincoln and Roosevelt Elementary Schools. There will be no additional charges to families participating in the extended-day program.

Registration for kindergarten for the 2008-2009 school year will be held on Tuesday, April 8, 2008, from 2:00 p.m -7:00 p.m. at your neighborhood elementary school. If you are unable to register on that day, please come to the Board of Education building, 1470 Warren Road, from 8:30 a.m.-3:00 p.m. Please see inside this newsletter or check our web site, www.lakewoodcityschools.org, for a complete list of information that you need to bring with you to register your child.

APRIL HIGHLIGHTS
Author: Author Shelley Pearsall will work with our 5th graders in creative writing on April 3. All of the students read her book entitled Trouble Don’t Last about the Underground Railroad. A special thanks to Mrs. Little for arranging this and to our PTO for helping to fund this visit.

Classical Lunch: We will hold our annual Classical Lunch on Friday, April 11. Students will be treated to table cloths, flowers and “candles”. A harpist will provide background music for this event. We encourage all students to dress up on this day. A special thanks to Mrs. Schiazza for arranging this event.

Book Fair: Our PTO will sponsor a second book fair during the week of April 14. More information is included in this Chalktalk.

DARE Basketball Tournament: Our 5th graders will participate in the all city basketball tournament on April 26 at Harding gym.

MOHICAN TRIP
Due to a snow storm, we needed to cancel the 5th grade trip to Mohican earlier this month. We were able to reschedule it for June 4-6.

TAFT CLOSING CELEBRATION
Due to our rescheduled Mohican trip, we need to change the Taft closing celebration to Wednesday, May 28. More information will be coming home.

CAR NOISE
As we move into the warmer weather, car and school windows are open. Please turn down your radios while waiting in the pick up line. The music is distracting our 5th grade students in the modular units.

PHONE CALLS AT THE END OF THE DAY
Please avoid calling the school to give messages to your children. We can get upwards of 10 messages to relay at the end of the day and this can get quite hectic in the office.
