Award of Excellence OAHSM

Since 1959, the Ohio Association of Historical Societies & Museums, in partnership with the Ohio Historical Society, has led the state in recognizing the excellent projects, programs, and publications produced by Ohio's historical societies, museums, and related organizations, and the people who make them happen.

The History Outreach Awards recognize outstanding projects, including public programs, exhibits, and media and publications, that have educational content, have contributed to the promotion and understanding of local and state history, and that have had an impact on the community. History Outreach Awards are presented in two categories: Excellence Award and Commendation Award. The Excellence Award is given to projects that are judged to be excellent compared with similar projects.

The write up for our project (we received an Excellence Award for Organizations with Budgets Above $25,000) reads:

Involving children in local history projects has long been a focus of the Lakewood Historical Society. Over the past three years, the society has worked with second and third graders from Grant Elementary School to produce three short documentaries; The Heart of Lakewood; Templar: The Superfine Small Car: and Birdtown: Lakewood's Oldest Neighborhood. The students did the research using primary and secondary sources, gathered photographs, chose music, and conducted oral history interviews to piece together each documentary.
