Pele Is an Old Rival of Stokers’ Navarro

The Stokers, as a team, look forward to tomorrow night’s soccer game with Pele and his Santos team. But center halfback Ruben Navarro has a special interest in the international exhibition match.

You see, Navarro and Pele are old rivals from their playing days in South America. In fact, they have faced each other six times in matches between Navarro’s Independinte Club of Argentina and Brazil’s Santos team.

Navarro, who laughingly claims to be an interpreter for Stoker teammate and fellow Argentinian, Amancio Cid, still finds our language tougher to tackle than an opposing forward. So Stoker fullback John Borodiak, who admires Ruben and Pele, was the day when Navarro discussed Pele.

"THERE IS no question about it, Pele is one of the greater players in the world," Navarro said.

"He is a most dedicated soccer player. He spends nearly all his time playing or practicing the game.

"I enjoy playing against him very much. Pele is a man who will play an honest game of soccer. He will try very hard, but honest. But if you play him rough he will do the same.

"Pele is truly a great player," Ruben concluded.

BORODIAK, who came to Cleveland with Navarro from Philadelphia, has the highest regard for his rugged teammate.

"Ruben is the type of player who never makes a mistake. He has experience and is a very steady player. He really never plays a bad game of soccer.

"Ruben likes playing for our coach, Mr. Norman Low, very much. And so do I," Borodiak added.

Although Pele rates most of the ink, the touring Santos team has several other top performers.

LEADING scorer of the club is center forward Toninho, who is described as a powerful shooter. Another is Pepe, the outside left, who is considered very accurate on free kicks from as far away as 35 yards.

One of the most talked about young players in Brazil is Douglas, an 18-year-old, who is a threat with either foot. HE was chosen for the National team when he was just 16.

Megalvio, a forward is the most experienced player with Santos and was a member of the 1958 and 1962 World Cup championship teams.

Santos will arrive in Cleveland this morning and will headquarter at the Pick Carter Hotel.
