Defense Is Problem for Cavalier's Fitch

"I think we're playing pretty well offensively, headwise that is," Cavalier's coach Bill Fitch said yesterday, "but we don't adjust from offense to defense yet.

"So far, you can compare our defense to the national debt."

The Cavaliers have just five more days at Baldwin-Wallace training camp before they open their exhibition schedule Saturday against the Buffalo Braves.

"THIS WEEK there will be work on running, hustling and defense," continued the coach.

"We'll have to develop team play and try and get some consistency."

Fitch ran his charges through a scrimmage Saturday night under game conditions and though it matters little, the Reds beat the Golds, 106-67.

Veteran Len Chappell led the Reds with 21 points, playing about half the time. Rookie Gary Suiter, operating at forward for the Reds, made seven of 10 from the floor, scoring 16 points. He also grabbed 15 rebounds.

AL JACKSON, free agent from Benedictine High and Wilberforce College, played a superb floor game and also chipped in 17 points for the winners.

John Johnson, No. 1 rookie from Iowa, had 14 points for the losers, mostly in the third quarter. However, defensive play nearly collapsed in that session when Johnson shot repeatedly while unmolested.

Reviewing the scrimmage, Fitch said the center position continues to be a problem.

Walt Wesley, 6-11 pivotman from Chicago Bulls, went at half-speed during the scrimmage. He's suffering from a hamstring pull in his left leg.

LUTHER RACKLEY, 6-10 draftee, from Cincinnati Royals, was not impressive during the game or in recent drills.

"We've had trouble getting the centers to kick the ball out and get it down court," explained Fitch.

"Maybe the big guys are late coming. I hope so. We'll know more this week."

It's probable Fitch will cut one or two players from the squad today.
