Cavs to Play 10 Exhibitions
By BILL NICHOLS
Cone September, the Cleveland Cavalier will become more than a little acquainted with Ohio's complex of freeways as they wind their way through a 10-game exhibition schedule announced last night.
The Cavs, who will begin training Sept. 1 at Baldwin-Wallace College, open their pre-season play Saturday Sept. 19 at Wooster against another new entry in the National Basketball Association, the Buffalo Braves.
The Balance of the schedule is as follows: Sept. 22, vs. Chicago Bulls at Akron; Sept. 23, at Buffalo Braves; Sept. 25 , vs. Phoenix at B-W; Sept. 26, vs. Phoenix at Dayton (Cincinnati vs. Buffalo in second game of doubleheader); Sept. 27, vs. Seattle at Canton; Oct. 4, vs. Milwaukee at Arena as part of basketball-hockey double-header; Oct. 6, vs. Cincinnati at Columbus; Oct. 8, vs. Cincinnati at Lorain; Oct. 11, vs. Milwaukee at Bowling Green.
ALTHOUGH the NBA schedule has yet to be completed, The Plain Dealer learned the Cavs will open their season Oct. 14 at Buffalo, followed by five West Coast contests with Portland, Phoenix, San Francisco and Los Angeles.
"Our exhibition games around Ohio all have local sponsors," said Cavs president Nick Mileti, "and they're all in various stages of the work at this time.
"The response around the state has been tremendous."
Mileti originally hoped to open the season at the Arena on Oct. 10, which is three days prior to the official opening date.
The Ice Capades begin two-week run at the Euclid Avenue icehouse on Oct. 13 and he wanted the Cavs to stage a "World Premiere" here before going on the West Coast trip -- but the Player' Association nixed the idea.
THE PLAYERS' group has voted against extending the season, in fact, reliable sources say the association would like to shorten it.
"It was something we would do only once," said Mileti. "You only have one World Premiere. We wouldn't have asked for it in any other years, but this one."
Mileti will present an extravaganza, but it will be the Cavs seventh game and not the first.
San Diego, with Elvin Hayes, little Calvin Murphy and former Michigan star Rudy Tomjanovich, will help Cleveland open its Arena season on Oct. 28.
"It still will be a World Premiere," promised the Cavaliers boss.
