IntroductionIn 1989 Lucy Lang Sekerka completed her research into the casualty lists of Lakewood servicemen who served and died in the U. S. wars between 1917 and 1975. The goal of her project was to find the names of all the U.S. servicemen from Lakewood, Ohio* who had have given their lives during World War I, World War II, the Korean war or the Vietnam War. She entitled her research More Than Names because she provided name and rank, date and place of death, a Lakewood address, graduation date from Lakewood High School where applicable, and a brief synopsis of the service records of hundreds of our war heroes. This work is presented in the Local History files of the Lakewood Public Library as an historic document: the facts remain as she presented them to the Mayor of Lakewood in 1989 to help establish a monument to these men. We welcome any additional information about Lakewood's war dead at lpl@lkwdpl.org.*Criteria for the list were as follows: 1. Lakewood residents at the time of death 2. Student at Lakewood High School prior to enlistment. Accessing the Casualty RollsThe following web pages contain the names, street addresses and circumstances of death for over 330 men from Lakewood who died in the military during the 4 conflicts above. Because of the large amount of text, the wars have been divided into two sets of maps. One includes World War I, Korea and Vietnam, containing the information on 59 servicemen; the other, for World War 2, contains 276 servicemen's stories. Clicking on a specific map quadrant will take you to a larger, more detailed image map, where you can see which casualties were from those streets. Clicking on an ID number on that map will take you to the story of that particular serviceman. |
