"History Walks" in conjunction with LIVE WELL LAKEWOOD initiative
Live Well Lakewood held a community health fair in January at Garfield Middle School. The mission of Live Well Lakewood is to provide information, programs and resources that promote healthy, active living in Lakewood. In support of its goal to elevate the healthy habits of every workplace and every family residing in Lakewood, the program seeks to bring together every Lakewood community organization to focus on a city-wide public health strategy. In keeping with this objective, The Lakewood Historical Society presents Lakewood Walks, a series of history/health walks. |

LAKEWOOD HISTORY PROJECT
Each term teacher Dina Bluemel's students in Grant School's 2/3
Discovery Class work with Executive Director Mazie Adams to research
a Lakewood history topic using primary and secondary sources. Students
take notes, organize information, create timelines, and produce
a documentary movie.
This year's project was a documentary of the Detroit-Warren intersection, the Heart of Lakewood. Students studied maps, read books, conducted oral history interviews, selected historic photos and went on walking tours to research information for their script.
Previous
years' projects:
Cowan Pottery, which
started right here in Lakewood.
The
Templar Automobile: A Superfine Small Car, which was built in
Lakewood in the early 1900s.
Birdtown:
Lakewood's Oldest Neighborhood.
AASLH AWARD: The Lakewood Historical Society and Grant Elementary School were recipients of a 2008 Award of Merit from the American Association for State and Local History (AASLH) Leadership in History Awards for the Lakewood History Project.
