The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ)
The local congregation is the basic unit of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). Each congregation manages its own affairs and relates to other churches in the region. The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) is involved in local, national, and international ecumenical gatherings and is committed to a cooperative style of relationship with other Christian churches. It is a protestant denomination of nearly a million members in the United States and Canada. It is one of the largest faith groups founded on American soil. Rev. John T. Opsata, Pastor
17513 Detroit Avenue This congregation started as a Union Sunday School held in the West Rockport Schoolhouse in 1872. The first worship service was held January 27, 1878. Its first building, Rocky River Christian Chapel, was built west of Park Row on Detroit Avenue. In 1929 the education unit was constructed. The current tan brick sanctuary was dedicated in 1953, the congregation’s fourth building. It is known for its red doors, and is home of the "Red Door Four" barbershop quartet. Each Sunday morning worship is filled with music, biblically based life-centered preaching, the blessing of children, and holy communion open to all. With an emphasis on church unity and an eye to the social needs of the community, the building is also home for Scouts, two Alcoholics Anonymous groups, Blue Star Mothers, monthly community meals, and other community groups. Characteristic beliefs of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) are immersion baptism and weekly communion which is open to all believers. |
