Charles CarrollLast survivor of the signers of the Declaration of Independence was Charles Carroll, an American statesman who became famous as a patriot during the Revolutionary War and lived to be 95 years old.

Ohio's Carroll County and its seat, Carrollton, in east central Ohio were named in his honor.

Carroll was born in Annapolis and educated abroad. Upon returning in 1765, he settled on an estate in Maryland.

When news of the Ohio naming gesture was conveyed to him by General H.A. Stidger of Carroll County in 1832, Carroll smiled and said he greatly appreciated the compliment. Six months later, on Nov. 14, he died in Mont Clare near Baltimore.

Also named after Charles Carroll were counties in Virginia, New Hampshire, Missouri, Mississippi, Maryland, Kentucky, Iowa, Indiana, Illinois, Georgia and Arkansas.
