David Deming
sculpture of Ohio wildlife on both sides of the entry to the Children’s
and Youth Services wing on the north side of the first floor. In this Lakewood-specific
installation, one side is the artist’s expression of “lake”
and the other side is “wood.”
David Deming is President and CEO of the Cleveland Institute of Art (CIA) and an internationally recognized artist. He has exhibited in numerous shows, including an American Sculpture Exhibition at the White House, and has works in more than one hundred public and private collections. He recently had a piece commissioned for the John and Mildred Putnam Sculpture Collection on the CWRU university campus. This large, circular, abstract stainless steel piece is characteristic of many of Deming’s works but he is also well known for commemorative busts and plaques.
Deming is a graduate of Lakewood High School. He has a BFA from our Cleveland Institute of Art and an MFA from the famed Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan. Before taking the healm of his alma mater, CIA, he was a member of the University of Texas faculty from 1972 to 1998. There, he held the Marguerite Fairchild Professorship, chaired the Department of Art and Art History and served as Dean of the College of Fine Arts.

The beloved Reed Thomason Mural from the
old Children's Room has been re-installed in the new Toddlers' Room in the
Children's and Youth Services section. Be sure to visit it online
