Dewey’s Pizza
Dewey’s, located on Detroit at the west end of Lakewood, has three essential ingredients for a primo pizzeria. Their pizza is fresh and delicious (try the white pizza - it’s to die for), both staff and space are very family friendly, and best of all, you and the kiddos get to watch the Dewey boys twirl dough high in the air and create your ‘za with artful precision and grace through a nifty observation window. The highlight: they’ve been known to throw small puffs of flour at the glass where the window’s smallest, most unsuspecting faces gaze on in delighted, then startled amazement. For more information visit www.deweyspizza.com or call 216/228-2299.
West Side Market
The West Side Market is an amazing place to take the kids. This nearly 100-year-old historic market square has an outdoor arcade that features 85 stands where vendors call out competitive prices and cut free samples as customers peruse affordable produce and out-of-the-ordinary culinary choices. (Have your kids ever tried an Asian fruit called a lychee?) Inside the market’s cavernous core you’ll find over 100 stalls with vendors selling meats, cheeses, bakery delights, pasta, candy, coffee beans and ethnic foods. Weekdays are less crowded, and thus more kid-friendly, but anytime is a great time to go, year round. Kids love pasta, right? Get it fresh and flavored at Ohio City Pasta. Grandma’s Fresh Bake, Campbell's Popcorn Shop and Candy Corner all offer sweet delights. Try an empanada or falafel wrap. Older kids who aren’t faint of heart will gawk at a pig (yes, a whole pig) carcass ready for butchering or want to know what people do with one of those purple, bumpy cow tongues. Little ones will be awestruck by the market's lively atmosphere and multitude of choices. In the warmer months, the square across the street often showcases local crafts, dancing and music. Open Mondays and Wednesdays, 7 a.m. - 4 p.m., and Fridays and Saturdays 7 a.m. - 6 p.m. For more information, check out their website at www.westsidemarket.org.
